Making Waves: Ritchie’s Peninsula Stores Take Out 5 Awards
In the face of rising costs, diminished customer loyalty and the boom of e-commerce, Australian grocery stores are under increasing pressure to raise their standards. In this $100 billion market, it might appear that the big players are winning out – but as the 2018 IGA Awards of Excellence revealed, customer-centric strategies and technological innovation is now enabling independent grocers to compete on a far more level playing field.
Along with all the criteria you’d expect of retail awards such as branding, profitability and merchandising, IGA’s awards recognise stores that have gone above and beyond to deliver great service, contribute to the community and provide an outstanding customer experience.
Ritchie’s SUPA IGA Dromana was a standout performer, scooping up four award categories including National Retailer of the Year and Retail Transformation and Innovation, while Peninsula neighbour Ritchie’s IGA Mount Eliza was recognised for their exceptional delicatessen department.
Servicing a population just shy of 24,000, Ritchie’s SUPA IGA Dromana and Ritchie’s IGA Mount Eliza are two excellent examples of how innovation can contribute to commercial rewards and benefit the consumer.
Partnering several years ago with GPK under a plan by the Independent Retailers Association (MGA) to significantly improve technology across the MGA group, Ritchie’s Dromana, in particular, undertook extensive work to improve the speed, ease and efficiency of store communications including:
- Cisco VOIP phone system (desktop and cordless)
- Wireless and wired networking equipment
- Hikvision CCTV
- Project management and coordination of other technology suppliers (i.e. extant POS, scales, fridges, electricians etc.)
It was a substantial project, which could not have been so successful without Ritchie’s store development team, contractors and suppliers. The combined efforts meant we could ensure minimal disruption to daily store operations and a smooth transition for customers and staff.
